Reduced complexity, improved performance in waterborne formulations: inherently matte acrylics and cationic functionality without compatibility issues

Using a proprietary process, Zschimmer & Schwarz offers an inherently matte acrylate polymer. After drying, a film with low gloss, high flexibility, excellent stability and, above all, excellent transparency is formed. The time- and labour-consuming incorporation of solid matting agents is eliminated, making the formulation much simpler, more stable and more economical.

The IPN technology (interpenetrating polymer network) of Zschimmer & Schwarz involves two different ionic structures in the same polymer network at a neutral pH value. These polymers form cationic functionalities during drying, providing excellent tannin, stain and dye blocking without the compatibility problems common to cationic polymers.

This talk outlines how these innovative polymer technologies benefit applications in graphic arts or wood coating, meeting the increasingly demanding requirements of modern coating formulations.

Finding a formula capable of reproducing the desired color without the aid of special formulation software is a very difficult task for those who do not have the necessary experience.

Fortunately, the use of some numerical systems and their graphic representation can make this operation simple.

A formula consists of a certain number of ingredients (dyes, pigments, concentrated pastes) suitably selected from those available, with the respective quantities.

For example, if we consider the colorimetric coordinates L, c, h and the tristimulus values X, Y, Z, we note that the first system allows you to easily identify the characteristics of each color (Brightness, Tone, Saturation), while the second can be used, albeit in an approximate way, for the estimate of the color Strengh.

Therefore, having these values, for the ingredients, the standard, the batch, can provide a valid help in defining a first acceptable formulation, even if approximate.
Subsequently, the updating of the Lch and XYZ values obtained from the result of the first formulation will allow the identification of the appropriate corrective actions, which will allow to obtain a sufficiently precise final color formula.

IS CHEAPER ALWAYS BETTER? Cost-in-use RAL shade matching for an industrial application

IS CHEAPER ALWAYS BETTER?

In this lecture the pigmentation possibilities of the RAL colours 1023 Traffic Yellow, 2004 Traffic Orange, 3020 Traffic Red will be shown, also using a classic lead pigmentation as a reference. For industrial applications, different pigments and pigmentations will be compared in terms of material costs, opacity and long-term outdoor durability to show the long-term costs of colour maintenance.

This study is ultimately intended to raise awareness among paint manufacturers that the supposedly cheap pigments on a per kilo basis may prove to be less cost-efficient than the expensive pigments in the long run.

Performance e Sostenibilità, due concetti distanti? Priplast, polioli 100% biobased

When we look for a high biobased content polyol, we somehow expect a compromise in terms of performances of the final formulation, when compared with a similar product from petrochemical resources. Luckily, it’s not always the case. A good example is the Priplast product range: polyester polyols with a high renewable content (up to 100%!) based on dimer fatty acid chemistry. Thanks to the flexibility and hydrophobicity that this group provides to the polyol, it is possible to achieve high performances in terms of durability, chemical resistance and surface adhesion, with a high sustainability profile of the final formulation. And we all know how important this is in the current coatings market.

Air pollution is one of the world's largest environmental health risks. Moreover, the level of hazardous air pollutants can be five times higher in indoor air than outdoor air. Much of the pollution found indoors comes from VOCs emitted from carpets, furniture, electronics, household cleaners and other synthetic materials.
Chronic exposure to these invisible toxins, such as formaldehyde, can create long-term health problems. Due to a multitude of formaldehyde sources commonly found within indoor environments, it is a significant challenge to address the emission of each source individually. Therefore, an attractive solution to reducing indoor formaldehyde levels is through a chemical remediation or scavenging system. One of the emerging trends for the effective removal of indoor air contaminants is the use of functional coatings. We demonstrate how the unique functionality of amino alcohols can help improve indoor air quality by providing high-efficiency formaldehyde scavenging performance when used in waterborne architectural paints. Amino alcohol additives are highly effective at low dosages and do not require major reformulation work, enabling the creation of functional coatings to improve indoor air quality.

Dispersore in linea Epsilon

L’installazione all’interno dei siti produttivi è estremamente semplice.

Moisture curing, isocyanate-free protective topcoats

Silane moisture curing coatings are based on a two steps chemistry.  In the first step, silane functionalized polymers react with water from the ambient air to yield silanols. In the second step, silanol groups condensate to form siloxane cross-links. This technology is increasingly used for high performance marine and protective applications.

This presentation discusses a new family of polymers based on the combination of vinyl neoesters and vinyl- or acryl- alkoxysilane monomers where the silane monomers provide a fast and efficient curing of the coatings whereas the highly hydrophobic vinyl neoesters ensure a high stability of the systems in the can and an excellent durability to the coatings.

Tests of these new binders in 1K coatings demonstrate that high solids, fast drying and long shelf life can be combined in a cost-efficient isocyanate-free solution. These binders are valuable alternative to 2K polyurethanes and acrylic-polysiloxanes for many applications, especially in protective coatings.

Valida: Natural cellulose as source of inspiration in waterborne coatings

Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer on Earth and the main component of all plants. It makes sense to harness this resource and unlock its potential as a biomaterial. One development centered around this is Valida.

Valida is fibrillated cellulose manufactured by Sappi, a 100% natural, biodegradable and sustainable material produced by mechanically processing wood derived cellulose fibres down to their smallest components, resulting in innovative material properties.

These properties include excellent stabilizing potential, rheology modification and robustness. Valida’s unique rheology profile - high viscosity at rest and highly shear thinning - make it a suitable material for many applications, including waterborne Paints and Coatings systems.

In Paints and Coatings, fibrillated cellulose acts as multifunctional stabiliser mimicking synthetic solutions while improving the sustainability, reducing VOC content and carbon footprint.

At the same time, Valida effectively improves the rheology of wet paint and provides reinforcement to the dry paint.

The high viscosity at rest results in stable formulations, better in-can stability and pigments’s stabilisation, and, ultimately, in reduced/solved syneresis.

Furthermore, the thixotropic nature significantly enhances the anti-sagging of the applied layer, preventing dripping.

In the dry paint, Valida solves the mud-cracking issue, provides better resistance to household chemicals and improves the contrast ratio/hiding power, complementing the TiO2 and boosting its opacity performances.

Novel options for sustainable waterbased wood coatings

The change to more stringent regulations is the main driver that push the wood coating formulators to optimise their formulations. Raw materials need to fulfil a broad range of requirements and in addition, provide the high level performance we all expect from any wood coating applied on furniture or parquet, etc.

As raw material supplier, technical and regulatory experts at Evonik work hand in hand in order to offer solutions.

This presentation will introduce in a first part a series of additives that are respectful of the environment and improve substrate wetting as well as crater elimination for waterborne wood coatings.

In a second part, the topic of defoaming will be discussed with two new products that offer a unique balance of defoaming and compatibility with a favorable regulatory profile.

Recent studies for paint failures in Architectural Coatings indicate that pigment dispersants have a large impact on the performance and the coating lifetime. We present a study to investigate the relationship between dispersant and coating performance in wall paint formulations. Properties shown to be affected by the dispersant choice, amongst others,  include color acceptance, wet scrub resistance, and water resistance. By using the optimum dispersant, compatibility is improved and the influence on wet scrub resistance, and therefore coating lifetime, will be demonstrated. SMA based copolymer dispersants optimize formulations allowing cost savings, performance and lifetime increase

Driers for the future – Ege Kimya innovative regulatory compliant and cost effective products that improve catalytic performance

The regulatory demands for the European market are increasingly restrictive and pose significant challenges for the formulation of alkyd based coatings, unsaturated polyesters and offset printing inks.  EGE KIMYA’s range of neodecanoate driers have been expanded and are shown to be effective replacements for the standard octoates.  The EGEDry® Prime range of polymeric cobalt products now includes EGEDry Prime LV Pro – the first of this technology to have a cobalt content of 6% with the added feature of reduced viscosity.  The range of through driers now includes overbased strontium – a more effective drier than zirconium especially at low and high temperatures and high humidity.  The most recent development from the EGE KIMYA R & D is the development of the EGECat® ClearCo series.  These new products are specific blends of metals with low cobalt content, originally developed for specific UPR applications, that are proven to be very effective in alkyd coatings.

I will expand more on the development and show the test results of these products.  This presentation is a snapshot of the commitment EGE KIMYA makes to the continuous development of products in the area of metal carboxylates.

Multi-Functional ELEMENTIS Talc Grades for High Performance Coatings

Durability and resistance requirements of paints and coatings are constantly increasing and at the same time paints need to be healthier for consumers and environmental. Talc as natural, inert and non-toxic material with lamellar and hydrophobic particles is economical and safe choice for many decorative and protective coatings. This presentation demonstrates how ELEMENTIS talc grades, that are pure and platy, improve the durability and resistance properties of decorative and protective coatings. The wet scrub resistance and surface resistance against different chemicals of decorative paints can be improved when pure, platy talc is used as extender. Also anti-corrosion properties of industrial coatings can be improved and at the same time VOC emissions can be reduced when special ELEMENTIS talc is used as extender.

Sustainable resins for sustainable coatings

In recent years, general sustainability awareness, legislation and consequently also customer requirements are dictating trends in industrial development, and the relatively conservative coating segment being no exception.

Alkyds as representatives of intrinsic-bio-based-derived polymers are still strongly present in many coating segments but they possess some intrinsic drawbacks. In the last decades, high-performance coatings are being produced from petrol-based raw materials, offering significant improvements in substrate protection and its prolonged durability while maintaining visual, protective and other special properties.

For a long time, water-based coatings were limited to less demanding applications, such as do-it-yourself (DIY) paints. After entering the new millennia, (European) legislation pushed industrial coating producers to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to impacts on human health and air pollution.

Many potential replacements of fossil-based building blocks are being increasingly investigated lately. Efforts are focused on new or improved bio-based monomers for polymer (resin) synthesis. The simplest case is the so-called drop-in approach where a fossil-based substance is replaced by an identical one derived from biomass. Bio-based carbon can be validated either by 14C or via bio-mass-balance (BMB) certification. Additionally, many alternative bio-substances have been used and evaluated in various coatings systems. Besides performance, cost-performance ratio must also be considered.

Increasing bio-based carbon is the first and most important step. However, accurate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is needed to claim sustainable resins and coatings.
