The Coating Paradox: Saving the Surface, Serving the Planet?
Time: 16:20 - 17:00
Date: 8 October 2025
Synopsis
Protective coatings are meant to preserve materials, extend product life, and reduce resource consumption—thus contributingto sustainability. But what happens when the process itself generates significant environmental impact? We find ourselves in aparadox: what protects also pollutes. Key issues addressed: • The contradiction between functional benefit and environmentalcost in surface treatments • The risk of reducing sustainability to product performance, without considering systemic effects •The growing pressure on producers to demonstrate transparency, governance, and accountability, especially in light of theevolving European regulatory framework (CSRD, taxonomy, EPR, PFAS phase-out, etc.), which is pushing companies tomeasure, report, and reduce their environmental impacts in a structured and verifiable way Strategic approach: • Use of LifeCycle Assessment (LCA) to assess real environmental impact over time • Integration of sustainability governance intodecision-making and corporate responsibility • Analysis of the link between environmental investment, brand positioning, andcompetitive advantage Role of technology: New technologies can help address this paradox—for example, nanocoatings thatimprove durability with lower material use and reduced application impact. Objective of the presentation: • Offer a frameworkfor strategic, data-driven sustainability choices • Show how tools like LCA, materiality analysis, and ESG integration supportlong-term value creation • Promote a shift from reactive compliance to proactive environmental leadership
