Date: 8 October 2025

Synopsis

As regulatory pressures and sustainability goals increase, formulators are challenged to adapt and deliver high-performancecoatings with greener raw materials. This study presents recent technical advancements using cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL)-based polyols and diols developed by Cardolite, emphasizing their performance across multiple application areas. The polyolevaluation includes a comprehensive analysis of cure behavior, mechanical strength, anti-corrosion resistance, and colorstability. Selected CNSL-based polyols demonstrate excellent flexibility and adhesion across a range of substrates, while alsooffering improved hydrolytic stability compared to conventional benchmarks. Particular attention is given to recentdevelopments in light-color CNSL polyols that overcome traditional color limitations and exhibit enhanced weatherability. Inaddition, the presentation introduces CNSL-based diols as novel building blocks for polyurethane dispersions (PUDs).Formulations using these diols were assessed against commercial benchmarks, with a focus on abrasion resistance, chemicalstain resistance, and UV performance. Results show that CNSL diols enable the formulation of light-colored PUDs withcompetitive, and in some cases superior, technical properties. Together, these CNSL-based materials offer a compellingcombination of sustainability and high performance, supporting long-lasting coating systems without compromising ontechnical requirements. This work emphasizes the versatility and value of CNSL as an essential building block for next-generation coating materials.
