Roflam OA-20: Advanced flame retardant for technical coatings and varnishes

Time: 14:20 - 14:40

Date: 9 October 2025

Synopsis

Modern fire retardant (FR) coatings play an essential role in protecting various objects against the destructive effects of fire. Depending on their mechanism of fire protection, these coatings can be classified as intumescent or non-intumescent. They are also distinguished based on the type of fire they are designed to withstand, including cellulosic and hydrocarbon fires. One of the most important applications for cellulosic FR coatings is the protection of wood. A key component of such systems is flame retardants. In non-intumescent systems, flame retardants are responsible for slowing down the spread of fire. Roflam OA20 is a novel oligomeric flame retardant designed for use in FR wood coatings. It is characterized by a high phosphorus content, which provides excellent protection against cellulosic fires. The product is in liquid form and has minimal impact on the transparency and gloss of coatings, making it suitable for use in clear varnishes for wood applications. This study presents the performance of Roflam OA20 in acrylic and polyurethane system and compares it with standard solutions available on the market.
As part of the project entitled: ‘Innovative and environmentally friendly raw materials and additives for the polyurethane Industry, produced, among other things, using raw materials of natural origin,’ co-financed under the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014–2020.
