Development and Evaluation of a Bio-Based Reactive Thinner for Epoxy Resins
Time: 15:50 - 16:10
Date: 9 October 2025
Synopsis
In response to the recent reclassification of common reactive diluents for epoxy (EP) resins as toxic for reproduction (Category 1B, H360F), our research has focused on developing a safer and more sustainable alternative for reactive thinners in EP-systems. This study introduces a reactive thinner derived from sunflower oil as a promising substitute that maintains performance standards while offering enhanced safety.
We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the reactive thinner in comparison to C12-C14 monoglycidyl ether, a standard reactive diluent, across critical parameters including thinning efficacy, mechanical properties, pot life, chemical resistance, and long-term durability and weatherability. Preliminary results indicate that viscosity adjustments of bisphenol A epoxy resin require a slightly higher concentration of the sunflower oil-based thinner. The sunflower oil-based thinner demonstrated comparable hardness, adhesion and mechanical properties.
Overall, this reactive thinner represents an innovative and sustainable advancement in epoxy resin technology, addressing the industry’s need for safer chemical formulations without compromising on quality and performance.
