From Raw Materials to Quality Control: An Integrated Approach to Formulation Development
Formulation priorities in the coatings sector
The development of paints and coatings today requires an increasingly delicate balance between performance, sustainability, regulatory compliance, production stability and economic competitiveness.
A formulation may include resins, pigments, fillers, rheology modifiers, dispersants, wetting agents, defoamers, biocides, waxes and numerous other functional additives. Each component performs a specific role and interacts with the entire system.
For this reason, the replacement of a single raw material, whether due to regulatory, technical, economic or availability requirements, cannot be assessed in isolation. An alternative with the same formulation function can alter viscosity, stability, wetting, gloss, film formation and application behaviour.
Looking at the formulation as a whole
The growing complexity of formulation systems makes a cross-functional approach essential.
Value lies not only in in-depth knowledge of a single product family, but also in the ability to understand the relationships between different components and assess the effect that each change can have on the entire formulation.
This overall view helps Research & Development teams identify compatible alternatives, reduce the number of uninformative trials and address more quickly the issues that may arise during development, industrial validation or scale-up.
The aim is not to replace the specialisation of individual manufacturers, but to connect expertise, technologies and raw materials within a coherent formulation project.

The value of technical consultancy
In this context, the specialist distributor is increasingly called upon to play a strategic role.
Product availability and logistical efficiency are complemented by technical consultancy, application knowledge and the ability to collaborate with customers’ laboratories and raw-material manufacturers.
A widespread presence across the country makes it possible to understand application needs quickly, follow projects over time and facilitate dialogue between the different areas of expertise involved.
This is the model followed by URAI’s Coatings Business Unit. (https://www.urai.it/prodotti-chimici-per-lindustria/prodotti/)
Thanks to a network of technical sales specialists distributed throughout Italy, URAI supports its customers’ Research & Development, Production and Quality Control departments every day with a consultative approach focused on building long-term partnerships.
A broad portfolio for a complete view of formulation
URAI’s Coatings Business Unit has a portfolio capable of covering more than 80% of the main raw-material families used in paint and coatings formulations.
This represents more than simply the breadth of the offering. It makes it possible to approach formulation with an overall view, assessing possible interactions between different product families and supporting the customer in finding the most effective formulation balance.
Resins, rheology modifiers, dispersants, wetting agents, defoamers, biocides, waxes, pigments, fillers and other chemical specialities make it possible to develop technical proposals that are consistent with the customer’s application, performance and regulatory objectives.
The breadth of the portfolio therefore becomes a tool supporting consultancy, capable of connecting formulation requirements, regulatory constraints, sustainability and process conditions.
From formulation to quality control
Coating development does not end with the selection of raw materials.
Performance verification, quality consistency, rheological control and colour reproducibility are fundamental to successfully transferring a formulation from the laboratory to industrial production.
For this reason, URAI integrates the expertise of its Coatings Business Unit with that of its Scientific Instruments Division, offering instruments dedicated to material characterisation, performance analysis and quality control. https://www.urai.it/apparecchiature-e-strumenti-da-laboratorio/prodotti/
This also includes Color WorkDesk (CWD) solutions dedicated to colour measurement. The offering includes proprietary software for managing colorimetry, colour formulations and quality control, together with CWD-branded benchtop and portable spectrophotometers.
The integration of measurement instruments and software makes it possible to centralise and share data between the laboratory, production and technical support, improving traceability, efficiency and process reproducibility.

Different expertise, one objective
The development of a coating is the result of collaboration between raw-material manufacturers, Research & Development laboratories, production technicians, quality-control managers and technology partners.
True value comes from the ability to connect these areas of expertise, share information and approach formulation as a complex and interconnected system.
In this context, URAI’s Coatings Business Unit provides formulation expertise, a portfolio of chemical specialities covering more than 80% of the main raw-material families used in coatings, and an integrated range of instruments and solutions dedicated to quality control and colorimetry.
An approach that makes it possible to support the customer throughout the entire journey, from the formulation idea through to validation of the finished product.
We look forward to welcoming you at Paint & Coatings Italy 2026 to discuss the sector’s new challenges and explore the value of an integrated approach to formulation and quality control.
