Microplastics in paints and coatings in the light of the new guidance

Time: 16:10 - 16:30

Date: 9 October 2025

Synopsis

In March 2025, the European Commission issued guidance to businesses on how to properly comply with the ban on placing microplastic particles on the market under the “REACH” regulation.
Specifically, the legislation on the restriction of chemical substances under Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (commonly known as “REACH”) was amended by European Regulation (EU) 2023/2055. The amendment bans synthetic polymer microparticles with specific weight, size, and length characteristics from the market. It is also prohibited to add them to mixtures. Glitter is included in the ban. However, biodegradable, soluble, natural, or inorganic particles are not considered microplastics and can therefore continue to be sold. The new rules have been in effect since October 17, 2023, but for a wide range of uses—including cosmetic products, detergents, and granular infill for sports surfaces—the ban will take effect between October 17, 2027, and October 17, 2035.
To support businesses in the sector in complying with the regulation, the European Commission, in collaboration with the EU Chemicals Agency (ECHA), has developed a three-part guidance document. The first part is a general overview that simply explains the restrictions. The second part consists of a Q&A section compiled from member states and stakeholders. The third part provides practical examples.
